Assembly
What day do you have assembly? Assemblies are in week 3 and 8 on a Wednesday.
Assignments
How hard are assignments? Oooh a good one. Assignments are hard enough for you to know you’re learning, but not impossible. We’ll teach you about the learning pit!
Will the assignments slowly get harder? Yes. But like primary school you will learn more and your brain will become stronger. Think about Kindergarten, could you do year 6 work in Kindy? Nope. But you can do it now!
What is the learning pit? The learning pit is what happens when you’re learning something new and it feels really hard. It means your brain is trying to understand something it doesn’t know yet. Everyone falls into the learning pit sometimes, but that’s how you grow and learn.
When you keep practising, ask for help, and try different ways to understand, you start to climb out of the pit. Once you get it, you feel proud because you worked through the challenge. The learning pit reminds us that feeling stuck is part of learning, not a sign of failure.
Break times
Will our play break time be at the same time as everyone else? Yes. Everyone has their break at the same time.
What will break times be like? There are 2 breaks. 30 mins each. During break we run connection clubs, but you can visit the library, play sport or just chill with your friends.

Camp
Is there camp in year 7? Yes! We’re going to the Tops in term 2.
Chromebooks
Will we get a Chromebook? All year 7s are given a Chromebook. This is provided by the ACT Government. You take it home, charge it and care for it.
When do we get our Chromebook? You’ll get your Chromebook during week 2. These are distributed at school.
Classes
Are year 7s and year 8s in the same classes? No you’ll see each other at break time.
Will we get to know who will be in our class before high school? You will know who is in your CREW class on transition day.
Enrolling
I am trying to enrol in 2026, do you accept students for year 9? Sorry, in 2026 we only have year 7 and 8 students.
Events
Are we going to have special events? Absolutely! We have House events at least once a term, Connection Day once a term, plus sporting carnivals, excursions, and special events like R U Okay Day.
First Day of School
What do I bring on the first day? Lunch box, drink bottle, pencil case and maybe one or two books!
Homework
What will homework be like? For the most part, homework in year 7 is finishing up things you don’t complete in class.
IMP Band
Do you have a band? We do!
Inclusion
Does the school support ALL LGBTQ+? Our school supports all. Every student is welcome and valued at Aunty Agnes Shea High School.
Learning
What if I fail? Am I smart enough? If you’re having difficulty with the work, let the teachers know. They will support you. Our aim is to build everyone up, starting from where they’re at. You are all smart enough!
Will we have free time in school and if yes what will we do in free time? There will be times in your class where you might finish the work early and the teacher will organise something. But there isn’t really free time where you get to decide what you’re doing.
On a scale from 1 to 10 how hard will math be? Probably π, because it never ends!
Will we dissect things in science? Yes, in year 8 and 9.
Library
What books are in the library? There are so many books in the library. Here are some examples. You can also suggest books and if we don’t have them, we’ll buy them.
Are we allowed to stay in the library even after school? We wish! At 3pm, all students leave the school grounds. Some afternoons there will be homework club run in the library. The library is open each break. Just chat to Melinda about borrowing.
Lockers
Do we get lockers? You can hire a locker. We recommend waiting until about week 4 of term 1 to see if you’d like one. Information is sent in week 1 of term 1 about hiring lockers.
Lunch & Canteen
What type of food will there be at the canteen?

Are we allowed to bring our own lunch to school? Absolutely! In fact you need to. The canteen is only open twice a week.
How do we pay at the canteen? Online ordering is preferred. We have one day of over the counter sales and this is with cash.
Is there any bubblers? No bubblers. But lots of water stations to fill up drink bottles.
Maps
How will I get around the school? We will help you and show you! We only use half of the building. On transition day you will take a tour. We will also have maps. Trust me, it will get easier.
Making friends
Will it be easy to make friends?
We think you’ll make lots of friends. We make sure students have the opportunity to work with lots of different people, which means you get to know everyone better.
Other
Is music allowed (like in class when you’re working)? You’re never not working! If you’re working independently, you can talk to the teacher about listening to music.
Are we going to make slime? This sounds like it could be a great Science project. You might want to do this for your Science Fair project!
Is there detention and if so how strict is it? We don’t do after school detentions. If you aren’t getting your work done in class because you’re being silly, the teacher will chat to you, and you might need to make the time up.
School Size
How many kids will be in the school? Approximately 160 students.
Sport
Will there be different types of sports? (What types?) There will be lots of sport! You will play sport in PE. You will also have different opportunities to represent the school. And we also have sport offered at break times.
Does the school have any sports clubs? We run sports at both breaks. We also have different teams going out at different times of the year.
Is there going to be a gaga ball pit? YES!!!

What subjects will I have? Year 7 will have:

Then you will do two of these in semester 1, and the following two in semester 2:

Is there a stop motion class? You can learn about stop motion in STEM!
What are the subjects we can choose from? You can’t choose any subjects in year 7.
Is math every day? Nope! Aside from CREW, each class is 3 times a week.

Will we know who will be in our classes for 2026? You will get a copy of your timetable towards the end of this term. We won’t be sharing the class lists with you. But you can compare them with your friends. Expect to be in some classes with friends but not all. You will meet new people who can become friends as well.
Do you have timetables? We do. Here is an example. You will get yours towards the end of term.
How many classes will there be every day (on average)? Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday you have short CREW (10 minutes) and then 5 classes. Wednesday, you have long CREW (110 minutes) and 3 classes.
Transition Day
When is the transition thing? Transition day is Tuesday 9th November (Week 9, Term 4). You will come to AASHS for the day and meet all the other year 7 2026 students. You’ll see te building, meet the teachers and participate in some classes.

Can you wear jewellery or button pins? Yes you can.
Do you have a sports uniform for year 7? No, we just have the uniform.
Where and when shall I get the uniforms for next year? Working Gear in Fyshwick.
